The Golden Apple Theatre is thrilled to present the Canadian premiere of the critically acclaimed one-woman show Kafka’s Monkey May 8 to 12 at The Artesian on 13th. All shows are 8 p.m.

Starring Jodi Sadowsky and directed by Ryland Alexander, Kafka’s Monkey, adapted by acclaimed writer Colin Teevan from the short story A Report to an Academy by Franz Kafka, is the tale, told by an ape imprisoned in a cage and desperate to escape, of how he became a walking, talking, spitting, smoking, hard-drinking man of the stage.

Jodi Sadowsky is thrilled to be making her Golden Apple Theatre debut in Kafka’s Monkey. Ryland Alexander (Director)
Ryland Alexander is a professional Actor, Director, and Educator and he is absolutely thrilled to be making his Directorial Debut for The Golden Apple Theatre. Ryland is a graduate of the University of Alberta BFA in Drama (Acting), as well as Rose Bruford College MA in Theatre Practices (Directing). Selected Directing Credits include: Jack and Jill: Deconstruct (The System Theatre), Monster (The Greenwich Playhouse), RENT: Highschool Edition (Teens at the Turn Festival), Baby Britain (Working Titles Festival). Ryland also has extensive experience collaborating on a variety of devised theatre projects. As an actor Ryland has been in over thirty professional production and performed across the country and overseas. Thank you so much for coming out to the show.
Melanie Rogowski (Stage Manager)
Melanie Rogowski is thrilled to be working on her first production with The Golden Apple Theatre. Melanie is a graduate of the BFA Stage Management program from the University of Regina. This season she has been working as the Production Manager for New Dance Horizons. She has worked at the Globe Theatre as an Administrative Assistant, Apprentice Director of Production, and an Apprentice Stage Manager on The 39 Steps, Buddy – The Buddy Holly Story, A Closer Walk with Patsy Cline, Copenhagen, and Sexy Laundry. In the summer you might be able to spot Melanie around the big white tent on the banks of the South Saskatchewan River where she will be Assistant Stage Managing Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan’s productions of Macbeth and The Comedy of Errors. She would like to thank Ryland, Jodi, Andorlie, Rob and The Golden Apple board of directors and volunteers for their tireless effort in creating such as successful season.

Renée Brad
Canadian mezzo-soprano Renée Brad has performed in opera, oratorio, musical theatre, and chamber and solo recitals throughout Canada and in New York. Renée is thrilled to be back in Regina and to be premiering her new cabaret Motherhood: The Second Oldest Profession for the Golden Apple Theatre Company.
She has appeared with Edmonton Opera, delighting audiences as Cousin Hebe in their Sterling Award-winning production of HMS Pinafore. Also for Edmonton Opera, she has sung Kate in Pirates of Penzance, Annina in La Traviata, Berta in Il Barbiere di Siviglia and the Dama/Hexe in Macbeth. She appeared as The Mother in Menotti’s Amahl and the Night Visitors and The Witch in Hansel and Gretel with Opera Nuova. Roles for Opera Saskatchewan include Tisbe in La Cenerentola, Kate Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly, and Berta in Il Barbiere di Siviglia. She has sung Mercedes in Carmen with Saskatoon Opera, Popova in Walton’s The Bear, and Kate in Elizabeth Raum’s The Dream of Nicholas Flood Davin with the Regina Centenary Project.
Favourite theatre roles include Rose in The Secret Garden, Meg Page in The Merry Wives of Windsor, Katisha in The Mikado, Amy in Company, and Ella in Bells are Ringing.
A frequent soloist with orchestras, Renée has sung Haydn’s Lord Nelson Mass and Paukenmesse, Schubert’s Mass in E-flat, Bruckner’s Te Deum, Mozart’s Coronation Mass and Requiem, Bach’s Weihnachts Oratorium and Johannes Passion, Vivaldi’s Magnificat and Gloria, Handel’s Messiah, and Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony
Renée’s recording of Elizabeth Raum’s How Bodies Leave Ecstatic Marks with the Contrasts Trio for the CMC Centrediscs label won a 2008 Western Canadian Music Award.
An active mother, Renée lives in Edmonton with her husband Vern and their children Zara and Gabriel.
God of Carnage ends a laugh-filled, successful run

The Golden Apple Theatre’s production of the hilarious Tony Award-winning comedy God of Carnage at The Artesian on 13th has just completed an amazing, successful run. Many thanks to the talented cast and crew and everyone who came out to see this wonderful, laugh-filled and thought-provoking show, which ran January 31 to February 10.
Winner of the 2009 Tony for Best Play, God of Carnage (by Yasmina Resa, translated by Christopher Hampton) relates an evening in the lives of two couples, residents of a tony Brooklyn neighborhood, who meet to discuss a playground incident. Alan and Annette’s son hit Michael and Veronica’s son in the face with a stick, resulting in two broken teeth. The four of them agree to discuss the incident civilly, but, as the night wears on and drinks are imbibed, the polite veneer breaks down…

Darla Biccum
Originally from Saskatchewan, Darla now lives in Toronto and has worked as a performer, adjudicator and educator for more than 20 years all across Canada. On stage or on screen, Darla is a dynamic and engaging performer. Last year, Darla was selected to be a member of the acting ensemble of the Women in the Directors Chair in Banff, AB. Feature film and TV credits include Vampire Dog, the Stephen King thriller Dolan’s Cadillac, Little Mosque on the Prairie and all six seasons of the CTV hit Corner Gas. Most recently, Darla appeared as Aunt Em in Globe Theatre’s production of The Wizard of Oz. Other theatre credits include the world premiere of Joey Tremblay’s The Alice Nocturne, Girl in the Goldfish Bowl, Hockey Mom, Hockey Dad, A Doll’s House and Pissy’s Wife.
Mark Claxton
Mark is appearing in his second production with The Golden Apple Theatre. Since graduating from the Globe Theatre’s actor conservatory training program in 2008, Mark has appeared in the Globe’s mainstage productions of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Black Bonspiel of Wullie MacCrimmon, and Robin Hood. He was a co-creator and performer for KaleidoCycle, which premiered as part of the Globe’s 2011-12 Shumiatcher Sandbox Series, and very recently appeared in Live Five Theatre’s production of Farragut North in Saskatoon.
Regan Thiel
Regan is making her Golden Apple Theatre debut, and is excited to be getting back on stage after a brief hiatus to become a mother for the first time. Regan was last seen playing the Princess in The Princess & The Handmaiden (LKTYP). Her Regina credits include Just So and Cinderella (Globe Theatre). Other selected credits: Urinetown, Sweeney Todd, A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Can Stage), Houdini (The Segal Center), Les Miserables (U.S. National Tour), Anne Of Green Gables (Stage West), Carousel and Man Of La Mancha (Drayton Entertainment). Regan has also performed at the Toronto Fringe Festival, as well as three seasons at The Stratford Festival. She was previously a member of the Carter Thor East Acting studio in Toronto. TV/Film Credits: Beautiful Girl (ABC Disney), The Headhunter (independent), Guilty Pleasures (not as scandalous as it sounds: CBC Documentary), and Pinco Triangle (independent).
Geoffrey Whynot
Geoffrey Whynot is delighted to be returning to Golden Apple, having directed Jacques Brel … to launch the company in 2009. Regina acting credits include Tuesdays with Morrie, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Six Dance Lessons …, A Christmas Carol, Just So, and The Secret Garden (all at Globe). Other than Brel, his work as a director in town includes Mrs. Dexter and Her Daily, A Closer Walk with Patsy Cline, Marion Bridge, Anne of Green Gables – the Musical, Stones in His Pockets and Over the River …(Globe). He has also appeared at the Shaw, Stratford and Charlottetown Festivals, toured a one-man show to Poland and Ukraine, and is the Director of the Globe Theatre Actor Conservatory. Esther Howie (Stage Manager)
Esther is thrilled to be working on another production with The Golden Apple. Golden Apple credits include Jacques Brel and Making Love in a Canoe. In Flanders Fields ends successful run

In Flanders Fields, a new Canadian musical telling the story of John McCrae, author of the iconic First World War poem that gives the show its title, ended a successful run November 18 at the Artesian on 13th.
Robert Gontier, bookwriter and co-lyricist of In Flanders Fields, was in attendance at both the school matinee and evening performance on Wednesday, November 14.

Directed by Golden Apple Theatre co-artistic director Robert Ursan, the show featured Leon Willey as John McCrae, with Mark D. Claxton and Aubree Erickson taking multiple roles. Angela van der Heuvel was Stage Manager, Dannyl Challis was the Lighting Designer, Sonja Clifton-Remple the Costumier, Gerry Weir did the set construction and painting, and Andrew J. Manera was the house technician and lighting operator.
The show was written by Robert Gontier & Nicky Phillips.

Mark D. Claxton is delighted to be making his debut with The Golden Apple Theatre. Since graduating from the Globe Theatre’s actor conservatory training program in 2008, Mark has appeared in the Globe’s mainstage productions of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Black Bonspiel of Wullie MacCrimmon, and Robin Hood. Aubree Erickson has loved working on In Flanders Fields with Angela, Leon, Mark, Rob and the Golden Apple team. She has worked with Globe Theatre (Metamorphoses, KaleidoCycle), Persephone Theatre (Urinetown), Winnipeg Studio Theatre (Spring Awakening), Tant per Tant (Buffalos), Dancing Sky Theatre (In the Air) and Wide Open Theatre. She holds a BFA in Music and is a graduate of the Canadian College of Performing Arts and the Globe Actor Conservatory Program. Robert Ursan (Director) was born and raised in Regina. Four degrees and many performances across Canada and Britain later, he returned to Saskatchewan to work and write. Since returning he has directed 64 shows and music directed a further 57. As a teacher, he has taught students who have performed in major theatres in Canada, the UK and the US. As a writer, he has written operas, musicals and plays. His works have been heard on the CBC and from the Brooklyn Academy in New York to the Canadian Embassy in Moscow.
Angela van den Heuvel (Stage Manager) has loved working with Leon, Mark, Aubree and Rob on this production of In Flanders Fields. She is currently in her sixth year at the University of Regina studying Stage Management. Previous productions that she has been involved with include The Medicine Line (Burning Sun Productions), KaleidoCycle (Globe Theatre) Lookingglass, Much Ado About Nothing, Eurydice, The Unseen, String of Pearls, Medea and Radiant Boy (University of Regina) as well as Little Shop of Horrors and My Fair Lady (Regina Summer Stage).
Sonja Clifton-Remple (Costume Designer)’s interest in design and fashion began at age seven when she cut off the sleeves of her t-shirts to design and construct belted maxi-dresses and wrap halter tops for her Barbie dolls. At 10 her mother taught her to sew and signed her up for sewing lessons at the local fabric store. At 18, Sonja dabbled full-time in the worlds of professional modelling, makeup artistry, fashion design, and photography at the internationally recognized Sheridan College in Ontario. She spent many years working with cosmetic companies such as Clinique, Lancome, Elizabeth Arden, Estee Lauder, Revlon, and Chanel. In 1994 Sonja enrolled part time in the University of Regina’s Theatre Department, studying Costume Design and Scenography. After university, Sonja continued with fashion and makeup in London, England. Since then, she has been fortunate enough to have a dual career as an award-winning designer and makeup artist in film, television, theatre, fashion, and photography. She has worked with numerous award winning celebrities, artists, and designers from Paris, London, Los Angeles, New York, Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Calgary, Germany, Japan, China, Italy, and Ireland.
Dannyll Challis (Lighting Designer) has been involved in the performing arts for more than 30 years. His love of the arts began while growing up in North Battleford. Dannyll attended Red Deer College and majored in Technical Direction. He currently works as a freelance technician, designer, production and event manager across Canada.

God of Carnage

God of Carnage, by Yasmina Resa (translated by Christopher Hampton) presents two sets of parents meeting to deal with the unruly playground behaviour of their children. The conversation that ensues between the parents is quite revealing and at times unruly. “Boys will be boys, but adults are usually worse – much worse.”

Making Love in a Canoe wraps up

The Golden Apple Theatre’s production of Making Love In A Canoe has now wrapped up, after playing to enthusiastic crowds for five performances plus a preview.
Created and performed by Regina-born Kyle Golemba, Making Love in a Canoe is a celebration of the finest in Canadian musical theatre.
Kyle has spent the last six years performing in a wide range of productions in theatres coast-to-coast, including four seasons at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival. After Canoe, he will be returning for his fifth season to play Andy Lee in 42nd Street. Past Stratford credits include Kiss Me, Kate (Gremio), West Side Story (A-rab), Evita, Fuente Ovejuna, The Music Man, The Grapes of Wrath, Jesus Christ Superstar, and Cyrano de Bergerac, as well as several understudy performances of Che in Evita, Bill in Kiss Me, Kate, Peter in Jesus Christ Superstar, and Connie Rivers in The Grapes of Wrath. Kyle also appeared in the Toronto transfer of A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. His other credits include Gilbert in Anne of Green Gables for Stage West, Rolf in The Sound of Music for Neptune Theatre, Roy in Anne and Gilbert for the Harbourfront Jubilee Theatre, and Prince Christopher in Cinderella for the Grand Theatre. Billy Bishop Goes to War has closed, after a fantastic two-week run at the Artesian on 13th (2627 13th Ave.) November 9-13 and 15-20.
The Golden Apple Theatre’s production of the Canadian classic, written and composed by John Gray in collaboration with Eric Peterson, was directed by Robert Ursan and starred Ryland Alexander and Wayne Gwillim.
Ryland Alexander is a recently returned Regina-based artist who has had the good fortune of working across the country and overseas. He recently finished filming 13 Eerie with Mind’s Eye Entertainment and enjoyed being a WWI hero by day and a zombie at night during this rehearsal process. Selected credits include: Theatre—As You Like It, A Christmas Carol, Julius Caesar (Citadel Theatre), Keeping Peace (Surreal SoReal Theatre), Are We There…Yet? (Concrete Theatre), Creation of the World and Other Business, Progress and Procrastination, Never Swim Alone (The System Theatre), Love’s Labour’s Lost, Henry IV Part I, The Taming of the Shrew, and Julius Caesar (Shakespeare In The Park). Wayne Gwillim is a Toronto-based musician. He grew up on a farm between Strasbourg and Duval—85 km north of Regina—and is a graduate of Luther College High School. Wayne was involved with musical and theatrical organizations while living in Saskatchewan, including Regina Lions Jr. Band, Do It With Class, and Regina Lyric Musical Theatre. After graduation, he pursued studies at University of Toronto’s Faculty of Music. Wayne now makes his living as a freelance music director, arranger, and vocal coach. Casting announced for Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris

The Golden Apple Theatre is pleased to announce the director and cast for its first production, Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris, which runs November 17 to 28, 2010, at The Artesian on 13th.
The director will be Geoffrey Whynot, well-known to Saskatchewan theatre audiences for his work as an actor and director at Globe Theatre over the past several years.
The cast will feature Golden Apple Theatre’s own artistic directors, Robert Ursan and Andorlie Hillstrom, along with Regina natives (now gone on to professional careers elsewhere) Ingrid Nilson and Jeff Irving.

The Golden Apple Theatre’s inaugural season was profiled in today’s Regina Leader-Post. It begins:
This fall, there will be a new professional theatre company in Regina. Andorlie Hillstrom and Robert Ursan — who long have been driving forces behind amateur and instructional theatre in the city — are teaming up once again, this time as co-artistic directors of The Golden Apple Theatre.
“We wanted to start a company that would be to some extent an extension of things that we’ve done up to this point, but we wanted to be able to take it into the professional realm,” said Ursan.

Bologne, A Tale in 3 Symphonic Acts
Adapted from the Novel by Pascal Blanchet, Production Conception by Andorlie Hillstrom
The curvy, retro lines and atmospheric panels of Canadian Pascal Blanchet’s graphic novel are brought to life in this original dance theatre piece. Russian fatalism sets the tone as the cast shares the tale of a village butcher, his disabled daughter, and her tutor in their doomed uprising against the swaggering Duke Shostokov. Light struggles to emerge from the darkness and endurance makes way for heroism, but does anything really change? Bologne is a smoldering call to arms against heartlessness and greed.

Ticket prices
Ticket prices for these productions will be $32.50 for adults, $20 for students (under 18 or with a student card), $15 for Wednesday previews, and $10 for student matinées. All prices include GST. Festival Seating will apply. Advance ticket outlets will be announced at a later date.
Venue
The Golden Apple Theatre is also excited to announce that it will be using the Artesian on 13th as its performance venue for the season. Built in 1950, the former church at 2627 – 13th Avenue has been restored into a new and intimate performance space that its owners have designed “to arouse a forgotten sense of belonging and purpose in both the performers and their audience, honoring and encouraging high-calibre talent with an appreciative, attentive audience.”
