Chilina Kennedy featured by the Toronto Star

Chilina Kennedy, who with Paul Nolan will be performing in The Golden Apple Theatre’s fundraising concert at the Royal Saskatchewan Museum January 21, was featured by the Toronto Star on December 17.

The story, headlined “Chilina Kennedy: The Army brat who became a star,” written by theatre critic Richard Ouzounian, begins:

To understand Chilina Kennedy, you only need to know two things: She’s an army brat and she’s an only child.

Bang! There you have it, the complex mixture of beguiling vulnerability and brassy assurance that’s made her the new reigning star of Stratford’s musicals, with a red-hot Maria in 2009′s West Side Story and an ice-cold Evita this past season.

Along the way, she also found time to charm everyone as the bewildered virgin courtesan, Philia, the conquest of whom lies at the heart of A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, being revived until Jan. 16 in a Mirvish/Stratford co-production at the Canon Theatre.

Kyle Golemba featured in Toronto Star…again!

Posted on July 30, 2010

Golden Apple Theatre board member (and Making Love in a Canoe creator/performer) was among those featured in the Toronto Star‘s story “Stratford cabaret: Saturday night’s all right for singing – Talking to five cabaret stars of Stratford Summer Music, celebrating 10 years,” which ran July 22 under the byline of theatre critic Richard Ouzounian.

Writes Ouzounian:

Golemba has a double function this year. The beaming, boyish blond is both the Master of Ceremonies for all five evenings, but he’ll also be one of the four featured new artists in the July 31 program, “The New Generation of Talent,” joined by Jordan Bell, Lindsay Croxall and Jennifer Rider-Shaw.

“There are definitely many paths as to what cabaret is,” says the enthusiastic Golemba. “For me, it will always mean Sharron Matthews, because seeing her in Sharron’s Party at its height gave me the inspiration and courage to go and do it myself.

“The four of us are all doing different things that we’ve wanted to do. I can only speak for myself, but I’m doing some stuff from my solo show, Making Love in a Canoe, as well as some songs by Nancy White, who has also been a huge influence on my career.”

Golden Apple Theatre board member Kyle Golemba, who performed his revue Making Love in a Canoe as a fundraiser for the theatre in January,  is part of the cast of Tony Award-winning director John Doyle’s new production of Cole Porter’s Kiss Me, Kate, which opened Tuesday at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival.

The photo, by David Hou, shows (left to right) Jaz Sealy, Kyle Golemba, Chilina Kennedy and Mike Jackson.

Kiss Me, Kate is a musical comedy about backstage romance during a musical production of Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew. The libretto is by Sam and Bella Spewack. The Porter score includes “So In Love,” “Too Darn Hot” and “Brush Up Your Shakespeare.”
